July 2024 Monthly traffic update Key points: • In July 2024, there was a total of 857k international passenger movements in the month, a 7% increase compared to the same month in 2023. International seat capacity declined by 0.2% to 1,041k seats for the month with international load factors rising to 82.4%, an increase of 5.4 percentage points on July 2023; • New Zealand passport holders accounted for 56% of all international passengers with volumes increasing 9% on July 2023. 45% of New Zealand nationals travelled on the Tasman route with the four Queensland routes proving popular, experiencing passenger volumes 21% higher than the prior year. Whilst the Pacific Islands are always popular in the winter months for New Zealand nationals, passenger growth this year was modest at 3% due to the civil unrest in New Caledonia and the voluntary liquidation of Air Vanuatu. Excluding New Caledonia and Vanuatu, the remaining Pacific Island routes increased 9% on the prior year; • International passport holders, excluding New Zealanders increased 6% for the month compared to July 2023; • Domestic passenger movements increased by 18k or 3% compared to July 2023, with seat capacity declining by 3%. Load factors were 84.3% for the month an increase of 4.3 percentage points. Auckland to Wellington route continues to underperform with 10k fewer passengers during July 2024 compared to prior year which is a 6% passenger reduction on 10% fewer seats resulting in load factors of 82.3%; • Total passenger movements for the month of July 2024 of 1,551k were 88% of the pre-COVID equivalent with domestic passenger movements at 89% and international passenger movements at 88%. For the rolling 12 months ending July 2024 total passenger movements reached 18.6 million, 90% of the pre-COVID equivalent; and • Queenstown Airport international passenger numbers in July 2024 increased 12% on the year prior and domestic passengers increased 10% on the same month last year.
